Written and directed by Marie Nova, a Milan-based artist exploring the art of performance as her new medium. While navigating the art industry, Marie grew tired of the stereotypical narrative of a ‘female artist.’ Searching for a theatre production that spoke to her, she found herself disappointed by the lack of depth in the typical female characters she encountered—characters she couldn’t relate to. This frustration led her to delve into the nature of performance art, particularly how it is presented in museums.
Marie decided to create a satire that could challenge and mock the art industry, spotlighting a female character who is both relatable and quirky. She chose not to name her protagonist, referring to her simply as the Girl — she is you, she is me. Marie’s passion for Slavic folklore and culture breathed life into the other characters, born out of her imagination.
The play unfolds as the Girl attempts to write a theatre show in her studio, only to find herself interrupted by Slavic demons who appear out of nowhere. She uses their presence to shape her play, resulting in a unique theatrical experience. Structured as eight distinct art performances, each scene feels like a museum exhibit brought to life.
Themes of the show include: feminism, satirical takes on the art industry, reversed sexism (featuring a male sidekick character without lines), and the search for identity while navigating life as a young woman.
Dramatis Personae
The Girl
She is your neighbour upstairs that sneezes too loud and moves the furniture at 2am. Bottled up Aquarius energy. Believes being a vegetarian will make her a better person.
Lillith
Your next door nonchalant Demoness. Tried onlyfans , convinced it is dull. Finds her depiction by Dante Gabrielle Rossetti hideous. Writes horoscopes for a living.
Vampire
The distant relative of Sava Savanović. Might have given his journals to Bram Stoker. Has a soft spot for Sirens that read Slavic folklore on trains. Team Edward.
Mermaid
The Slav version , a very rare breed. Completely harmless , unless you are a male, in that case deadly. Magnificent creature , remarkable flirting skills. A stunning singer.
