Girl Alone is coming to Milan, and according to the young women behind the immersive project, she is, in fact, you. How so, you might ask? Let us explain.
Together with a group of Milan-based lifestyle brands - all female-founded - Marie Nova of Wander Feeds explores the concept of a modern girl and her space, more specifically, her bedroom. With the immense help of new coming curators Dana Kabargina (she is the woman behind Manifest) and Noemi Dimasi (creative mind behind Hot & Vintage) who build the force for this art installation.
So who is she? She strolls around Salone Del Mobile, but cannot yet afford any of the expensive furniture pieces. She does, however, support her friends, and purchases objects of interest from women-run businesses in her city, be it her favourite hand-poured candles or a niche skincare brand. She will buy art - from living artists - and preferably from another girl she knows and supports. These and many other precious objects can be found in her bedroom, and this is exactly how the Girl Alone experience is designed - in a form of an open, dollhouse-like room: inviting, intimate, detailed.
Girl Alone is, interestingly enough, inspired by Tracey Emin’s then-shocking My Bed installation (1998) that could also be considered a 3D collage of sorts - of the artist’s hazy emotional breakdown. Yet Girl Alone takes on a more optimistic role. A scene from Emin’s painful experience transforms into a romanticised setting, however messy, shifting from dark vulnerability to a curious one, creating a warm, sacred feminine energy.
“The dialogue of this collaborative project insists on the idea that young women are learning how to handle the mental load, do take care of their mental health, body and their surroundings. The installation suggests that a present-time girl builds a community around her, supports her young friends, small businesses and the artists she knows and believes in… she is you, she is me”.
Girl Alone can be found during Milan Design Week, exclusively on June 11th, at Bocca Scena Cafe in Corso Magenta, 24 - between 11 AM and 8 PM. See you there!
